Swift Double From Sarah Sjostrom Heats Up Night One of Eindhoven Cup

Sarah Sjostrom

EINDHOVEN, The Netherlands, April 10. THE Swedish sprint star Sarah Sjostrom just won’t let up this year. After putting up some amazing times earlier this year at the Golden Lanes International meet, she was back at it again at the Eindhoven Cup this evening.

Sjostrom, who has been on fire this year with multiple top-ranked times in the world, came up just half-a-second shy of another one in the women’s 100-meter fly. Sjostrom, the Swedish speedster, took home that title tonight in 57.01. That’s off her top-ranked 56.53 from the Golden Lanes International meet in France, and she’s still the only person to break 57 so far this year.

Inge Dekker raced her way to third in the SwimVortex world rankings with a 57.33, while Jeanette Ottesen took third this evening in 57.78 to now stand sixth in the world so far this year. For good measure, Katarina Listopadova of Slovakia nearly cracked the top 10 with a fourth-place 58.49 to stand 11th overall in the world.

Sjostrom doubled up with a sizzling 24.15 to win the women’s 50-meter freestyle finale as well. That shot her to second in the world behind only Cate Campbell’s 24.13 from Australian Nationals last week. Ranomi Kromowidjojo pushed her way to third in the world with a strong 24.35 for second tonight, while Pernille Blume and Dekker tied for third with 24.73s.

Femke Heemskerk torched her Dutch record in the women’s 200-meter backstroke with a winning time of 2:10.21. Not only did that place her second in the world behind only Alicia Coutts (2:08.89), it downed her Dutch mark of 2:12.93 set earlier this year at the KNZB Challenger meet in Drachten. Lisa Zaiser finished second in 2:12.33 to move to ninth in the world, while Wendy van der Zanden took third this evening in 2:14.31.

Michelle Coleman earned herself a title in the women’s 200-meter back with a time of 2:10.56, while Jordis Steinegger finished second in 2:12.49. Kira Toussaint wound up third overall in 2:13.71. Mattias Carlsson followed with a 1:59.29 to win the men’s 200-meter back crown. Emmanuel Vanluchene (2:01.39) and Lander Hendrickx (2:02.63) picked up second and third in the finale.

Sebas van Lith took down the men’s 400-meter IM title with a 4:19.73 as he held off a hard-charging Erik Persson. Persson ran out of room as he took second in 4:19.82, although he was making a play for the title down the stretch with a 29.53 coming home. Louis Croenen finished third in 4:24.30.

During semis, Joeri Verlinden lowered the Dutch record in the men’s 50-meter fly with a 23.63. That swim beat his previous record of 23.66 from the semifinal heats of the 2010 European Championships. He wasn’t able to replicate that effort during the finale as he took second in 23.71 with Andriy Govorov picking up the title in 23.17. Govorov’s effort moved him to third in the world behind only Roland Schoeman (23.07) and Yauheni Tsurkin (23.11). Evgeny Korotyshkin placed third tonight in 24.04.

In semifinal action, Sebastiaan Verschuren led the way in the men’s 100-meter free with a 48.94.
