VICTORIA, Canada, April 5. AFTER taking last night off, Ryan Cochrane returned to the top of the podium this evening at the Canadian World Championship Trials.

After racing to a win in the men's 800-meter freestyle to kick off the meet, Cochrane returned tonight with a convincing conquest of the 400-meter free by way of a 3:47.08. That missed his meet record by the slimmest of margins as he clocked a 3:47.07 last year. Eric Hedlin finished second in 3:52.52, while Island Swimming finished a top-four sweep as Will Brothers (3:53.22) and Keegan Zanatta (3:53.89) took third and fourth in the event.

Savannah King opened up night three with a 4:10.34 to 4:10.82 triumph ahead of Samantha Cheverton in the women's 400-meter free. Barbara Jardin placed third in the middle distance event with a time of 4:12.17.

Katerine Savard, the Canadian record holder in the event with a 57.80 from 2011, pushed the pace in the women's 100-meter fly with a 27.02 before winning in 58.06. Noemie Thomas came roaring back with a 30.93 down the stretch but ran out of pool with a second-place 58.31. Audrey Lacroix wound up third overall in 59.17.

Coleman Allen clinched the men's 100-meter fly title in 53.57, while Edward Liu took home second-place honors in 54.29. Mack Darragh checked in with a third-place time of 54.37.

Hilary Caldwell made her mark in the women's 200-meter back with a dominant time of 2:09.31. More than two seconds back, Genevieve Cantin took second in 2:11.45. Sinead Russell, who had already won the 50 and 100 events earlier in the meet, took third in 2:11.52.

In a close contest, Russell Wood touched out Matt Swanston, 2:01.01 to 2:01.07, in the men's 200-meter backstroke finale. Jeremy DeZwirek rounded out the podium with a third-place time of 2:01.43.

Fiona Doyle prevailed in the women's 50-meter breaststroke event with a time of 31.35, while Tera Van Beilen touched second in 31.40. Chelsey Salli raced to third in 31.55.
