Croatian Swimming Federation Correction

By Steven V. Selthoffer, Chief European Columnist

KRANJ, Slovenia, June 29. SWIMMING World requested and received a response from the General Secretary of the Croatian Swimming Federation Mr. Tomislav Karlo in response to concerns over Olympic qualifying. His reply was timely, helpful and appreciated, offering a more clear explanation of events in Kranj, SLO.

Mr. Karlo stated “that throughout our 65 years of service we are dedicated to provide opportunities for training, competition and other activities for Croatian citizens interested in swimming, and in the same time to develop a greater depth of talent, and to continue the trend of improving performances across the national teams. We try hard to play a proactive role in the European and World swimming community.”

Mr. Karlo pointed out the FINA rule SW 11.6, that was brought to our attention by other Croatian federation members as part of the base of their viewpoint on issues was misapplied.

Mr. Kalo said that FINA rule SW 12.11 applies, stating: A swimmer in an individual event may apply for a World Record at an intermediate distance if he or his coach or manager specifically requests the referee that his performance be especially timed or if the time at the intermediate distance is recorded by Automatic Officiating Equipment. Such a swimmer must complete the scheduled distance of the event to apply for a record at the intermediate distance.” And that all races were done in accordance with FINA rule SW 12.11.

We acknowledge the correction. We regret the error.

We would like to thank Mr. Karlo for his contribution and clarification on these issues on behalf of all Croatian Swimming Federation members and to Swimming World. We also regret any hurt it may have caused to all involved, especially to all the athletes whom we serve and want to see excel and succeed- our apologies.
