Vinny Marciano Twice Lowers 11-12 U.S. National Age Group Mark in 100 Backstroke

PRINCETON, New Jersey, January 27. DURING the weekend at the New Jersey Age Group Championships held in Princeton, 12-year-old Vinny Marciano of Morris County Swim Club dropped the 11-12 100-yard backstroke U.S. National Age Group record twice.

First, Marciano clipped Destin Lasco’s short-lived record of 53.54 with a 53.43 during prelims. He split that race 26.02, 27.41 to equal his 53.43 qualifying time. Marciano later returned to win the 14-and-under 100-yard backstroke state title with a 53.26. During that swim, he went out in 25.77 before coming back in 27.49.

Marciano’s progression in the event is pretty remarkable. Entering this weekend, his lifetime best had been a 55.20 from last October at the Condors October Fall Festival. Previously, he had clocked a 56.03 in March of last year at the Eastern Zone Championships just weeks after clocking a 57.01 at the Berkeley Aquatic Club Junior Olympics.

Last year at this time, Marciano was sitting on a 58.24 lifetime best from the New Jersey Age Group Championships. That’s a five-second drop in one year for this budding age group star.

We’ve known about Marciano for awhile, as he appeared in our July 2012 issue as an up-and-comer to watch out for.
