Rick Curl to Plead Guilty to Child Sex Abuse Charges

PHOENIX, Arizona, February 5. RICK Curl will plead guilty to charges of child sex abuse at a hearing on Feb. 21, according to an article published today by the Washington Post.

The hearing comes about six months after the Post first reported on the four years of sexual abuse Curl put on former swimmer Kelly Currin, who was 13 when the abuse started. Currin was a swimmer on the Curl-Burke Swim Club in the 1980s, and was repeatedly sexually molested by Curl during her teenage years. After the abuse stopped, Curl paid Currin's family to not mention the abuse and to not press charges.

Curl had already been away from the deck at Curl-Burke when the allegations were made public last July, but he resigned from the team that bore his name one week later and was given a lifetime ban by USA Swimming. In September, Curl-Burke Swim Club became Nation's Capital Swim Club.

It is not known if Curl, 63, will face jail time or pay fines for pleading guilty, but the hearing on Feb. 21 will allow the defense and prosecution to present arguments. Hearings such as this also allow the victim to speak out.

The article in the Post says Maryland law stipulates that such a plea could carry a maximum 15-year prison sentence.
