GETTYSBURG, Pennsylvania, November 8. THE Gettysburg College swimming teams kept their perfect records intact with a Centennial Conference sweep over McDaniel College Wednesday evening in the Gettysburg College Bullets Pool.
The women's team earned a 105-79 victory while the men prevailed 107-70. Both Bullet squads are now 4-0 and 2-0 in the Centennial Conference.
Sophomore Cooper Kearns led the way for the women's team, capturing the 200-freestyle (2:03.50) and the 500-freestyle (5:21.92). She led a 1-2-3 sweep in both events and was followed by sophomore Ellie Houser (2:05.26) and freshman Sara Bias in the 200 while freshman Lea Candelmo (5:26.50) and Bias finished 2-3 in the 500.
The Bullet women captured three other individual events and finished 1-2 in both the 100-backstroke and 100-breaststroke. Freshman Alyssa Pepper won the 100-back (1:04.11) and was followed closely by classmate Sam Foote. Two other first-years paced the Bullets in the 100-breast, with Emily Schmitt winning in 1:11.05 and Marie Gingher taking second in 1:11.24. In addition, Candelmo touched first in the the 400-IM (4:52.11).
The women also won the 400-free relay to close the meet, but the event was exhibitioned. Senior Caroline Coolidge, Houser, junior Emily Healey, and senior Deirdre Purdy clocked a winning time of 3:49.22.
The men's team won seven events, including both relays. Five Bullets combined to capture five individual victories, led by a 1-2-3 sweep in the 50-freestyle. Freshman Tyler Gould won in 22.11 and was followed by junior Sean Staerk (22.24) and sophomore Mike Harmon (22.25).
The Bullets also went 1-2 in both the 100-butterfly and the 100-breaststroke. Harmon claimed the 100-fly in 53.95 with sophomore Woody Griffiths taking second in 55.83. Sophomore Will Nelligan prevailed in 1:04.80 in the 100-breast and was followed by freshman Zack Milko in 1:05.61.
Junior Adam Weinbrom added a win in the 100-back (54.59) while sophomore Ashton Leyens was victorious in the 500-free (4:58.34).
In relay action, freshman Kevin Hartnett, Nelligan, junior James Ianiro, and Weinbrom took the 400-medley in 3:48.39 while sophomore Jason Potter, freshman Zach Moser, Leyens, and Staerk captured the exhibitioned 400-free relay (3:13.73).
Gettysburg's women's team returns to the pool on Saturday, when it visits Bryn Mawr College at 1 p.m. in another Centennial Conference meet. Both teams host Ursinus College in conference action on Saturday, Nov. 17.
