Pacific Women Defeat Nevada In Dual Meet

STOCKTON, California, October 26. THE Pacific women's swimming team emerged victorious in its first dual meet of the 2012-13 season Friday, Oct. 26, defeating visiting Nevada, 138-124. The Tigers recorded seven first-place finishes on the day, including the final relay that sealed the win.

“I thought we swam very, very tough today,” head coach Peter Richardson said. “I was proud to see the girls step up. I was also really pleased with our seniors today. They would not let us be defeated despite going up against a quality Nevada team.”

Leading the seniors' effort was Allie Vetterlein, who placed in the top three in each of her four events on the day. She was part of the Tigers' winning 400 Medley Relay squad while also placing second in both the 200 Fly (2:07.84) and the 100 Fly (57.91). She added a third-place finish in the 200 IM, stopping the clock at 2:08.23.

Senior Becca Wyant also had a solid day in the pool for Pacific, taking third in both the 100 Breast (1:08.29) and the 100 Fly (59.00). She also swam the opening leg for the winning 200 Free Relay team.

Not to be outdone by her more experienced teammates, freshman Cristina Mardones accounted for two of the Tigers' five individual first-place finishes, winning the 100 Breast (1:05.23) and the 200 Breast (2:22.61). She also swam the second leg of the winning 400 Medley Relay team and added a runner-up finish in the 200 IM (2:07.91).

Joining Mardones with two event titles was sophomore Dekel Shahaff. Shahaff collected wins in both the 50 Free (24.58) and the 100 Fly (57.13), while also swimming the opening leg of the first-place 400 Medley Relay squad as well as the second leg of the first-place 200 Free Relay team.

Junior Hayley Shillington accounted for the Tigers' other first-place finish, winning the 200 Free with a time of 1:51.36, just 10 minutes after finishing the final leg of the first-place 400 Medley Relay team. She also helped Pacific's 200 Free Relay squad to an event title as the group's anchor while adding a runner-up finish in the 100 Free (53.10).

Pacific got second-place finishes from Kelsey Boreyko in the 1000 Free (10:41.20), junior Shelby Bolin in the 200 Back (1:00.60) and sophomore Annie Sumioka in the 50 Free (25.04). Sumioka helped the Tigers to a win in the 200 Free Relay while Bolin added a third-place finish in the 200 Back, clocking in at 2:10.91.

Junior Lydia Schramm finished third in the 1000 Free (10:56.21) while sophomore Shannon Mack took third in the 200 Breast with a time of 2:26.78, besting her time she set at the MPSF Championships last season. Junior Shannon Von Konynenburg added a third-place finish in the 500 Free for the Tigers, touching the wall at 5:14.70.

Pacific faces a quick turnaround from today's meet as both the men's and women's teams will hit the road for a dual meet at conference foe CSU Bakersfield tomorrow, Oct. 27. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
