Texas Men Complete Conquest of Southwest Collegiate Plunge

MANSFIELD, Texas, October 20. TEXAS claimed five of eight events on the second day of competition to finish off a victory at the four-team Southwest Collegiate Plunge Saturday at the Mansfield ISD Natatorium.

Texas opened up a lead of over 50 points after day one and handily put away the victory on day two. The Longhorns won the event with 857.5 points, and Texas A&M placed second with 754 points. SMU took third with 677.5 points and Incarnate Word placed fourth with 573 points.

“As a kickoff to what we hope will be an exciting season, we were very pleased with the performances of every swimmer and diver who participated in this competition,” said UT assistant men's swimming and diving coach Kris Kubik. ” We raced well. We fine-tuned some things we've worked on this fall, and that showed up within the races.”

Texas opened the day with a win in the 200-yard medleyrelay, as freshman Aaron Gustafson, seniors Nick D'Innocenzo and Dax Hill and junior Madison Wenzler took the victory in 1 minute, 32.78 seconds. Sophomore Clay Youngquist turned in a quick in-season time of 1:36.20 to take the 200 freestyle by over four seconds. Youngquist was a semifinalist in the 200-meter freestyle at last summer's U.S. Olympic Trials. Freshman Sam Lewis took the consolation final in 1:42.21.

D'Innocenzo returned to take the 200 breaststroke in 2:01.99. Sophomore Keith Murphy captured the event's consolation final in 2:06.88. Freshman Sean O'Brien led the Texas divers by taking second in the three-meter event with 344.40 points. Sophomore Ryan Anthony took sixth with 278.20 points. Hill followed by taking second in the 50 freestyle in 20.90. Sophomore Ben Anderson tied for third in 20.96. Wenzler won the consolation final in 20.89.

Sophomore Kip Darmody claimed the 100 backstroke and led a one-two Texas finish in 50.34. Senior Austin Surhoff took second in 50.92. Gustafson claimed the consolation final in 51.35. Freshman John Martens took second in the 200 butterfly in 1:51.00. D'Innocenzo, better known for his strength in the breaststroke and individual medley events, took third in 1:54.64. Lewis claimed the consolation final in 1:54.32.

The Longhorns finished off the victory with a win in the 400 freestyle relay, where Hill, Youngquist, Anderson and Surhoff took first in3:01.11. Youngquist split a meet-best 43.81 on the relay's second leg.

“We had some times that were faster than expected based on the workload we've been putting in every day,” Kubik concluded. “It was an outstanding start for the 2012-13 edition of Texas Men's Swimming and Diving.”

Texas returns home to the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center on Friday, Oct. 26 when it meets Indiana and Michigan.
