Delaware Names Kelly-Ayn McKay Head Diving Coach

NEWARK, Delaware, July 16. KELLY-Ayn McKay, a former standout diver at Virginia Tech, has been named the new University of Delaware men's and women's head diving coach, UD swimming head coach John Hayman announced Thursday.

McKay, who resides in Wilmington, Del., takes over for Peter Metrinko, a former UD diver who served in the part-time role for the past nine seasons and is leaving to devote more time to his position as an elementary school teacher in New Castle County. McKay will begin work as head diving coach in late August.

“I am excited to have Kelly-Ayn (pronounced “Ann”) join our staff,” said Hayman, who will begin his 24th year as head coach in 2012-13. “Kelly's expertise and knowledge of the sport of diving will certainly enhance our overall swimming and diving program at the University of Delaware.”

A native of Middlesex, N.J., McKay earned her degree in Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Management from Virginia Tech in 1992.

While at Virginia Tech, she was a four-year standout, serving as diving captain three years and competing at the NCAA Tournament in 1990. She still holds a school record for 11 dives on the three-meter board with a score of 431.70.

McKay returns to coaching for the first time since the late 1980's when she coached age group teams (ages 7-17) in Ohio, Indiana, and Florida and assisted at diving camps with successful coaches such as Stan Randall, Hobie Billingsley, and Pat Greenwell.

“I think we've got the largest group of incoming freshmen divers in history joining our men's & women's program this fall,” said McKay. “I am truly looking forward to a great season working with some outstanding student-athletes and helping to build depth, camaraderie, and team spirit.”

McKay worked in catering sales and operations in the Washington, DC and Philadelphia areas before operating Riverfront Audio Visual from 2003-08. She was Director of Sales and Marketing for Culinary Concepts in Philadelphia from 2009-11.

Since 2002, she has served as owner and operator of Wilmington-based i720media, a boutique marketing, design and consulting firm known for creating focused online experiences and providing special events support services.
