Another World Record for the Aussie Men -- September 2, 1999

By Stephen Thomas

Canberra, Australia - Following the record-breaking performance at the Pan Pacs last week, by Australia's men's 4 x 200m freestyle relay, a short course freestyle relay time trial was arranged today for the same event.

The team contained only two of the four from last week's record-breaking (long course) team. The swimmers all train at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in the nation's capital. The 'club' AIS team comprising of Michael Klim and Matt Dunn (coached by Gennadi Touretski) and Bill Kirby and Todd Pearson (coached by Jim Fowlie) broke the record set by Australia in 1997 at the World Short Course Championships in Goteborg, Sweden, clocking a time of 7:01.60.

The previous record was 7:02.74. The current and previous individual world record holders over the 200m, Ian Thorpe and Grant Hackett were also in Canberra for the start of the Australian Short Course Championships which start tomorrow.

Australian correspondent Stephen Thomas will be in Canberra to cover the Championships for Swimming World and Swiminfo.com.
