Burnett Takes Down British Record in 50 Freestyle

SHEFFIELD, England, August 8. ADD another British record to the portfolio of Simon Burnett. Just days after establishing a British standard in the 200 freestyle, Burnett popped a 22.12 performance in the 50 free at the Commonwealth Games Trials. Burnett was challenged in the race by veteran Mark Foster, who claimed second place in 22.46. Foster held the former record at 22.13.

Also qualifying for next year’s Commonwealth Games in Melbourne was Chris Cook, who covered the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.70, ahead of the 1:01.85 of James Gibson, the former world champ in the 50 breast. The third-place slot went to Darren Mew, who covered the distance in 1:02.03. Meanwhile, the 400 individual medley was taken by Rebecca Cooke in 4:45.52, a time that lowered her British mark.
