Peirsol Accepts Role as Ambassador for Surfrider Foundation -- June 29, 2005

SAN CLEMENTE, Calif., USA, June 29. THE Surfrider Foundation has struck up a relationship with Aaron Peirsol, the perfect individual to work with the organization. It was announced on Tuesday that Peirsol would represent the Surfrider Foundation as an official ambassador, a role which calls for Peirsol’s promotion of the awareness of beach and coastal environmental issues.

A four-time Olympic medalist, Peirsol walked away from Athens last summer with a trio of gold medals. Aside from winning the 100 and 200 backstroke events, Peirsol led off the United States 400 medley relay that established a world record. In leading off the relay, Peirsol set a global standard in the 100 backstroke. Peirsol has long been involved in surfing, making the Southern California native a strong match for the Surfrider Foundation.

“We are tremendously excited to be working with Aaron,” says Matt McClain, Director of Marketing for the Surfrider Foundation. “He is a true waterman in every sense of the word. Aaron’s willingness to advocate for our oceans, waves and beaches will be a tremendous asset to the Foundation.”

The Surfrider Foundation was founded in 1984 by several surfers and now boasts 40,000 members between the United States and Puerto Rico. It also includes international groups in Australia, Europe, Japan and Brazil. The Foundation is dedicated to the protection and preservation of oceans, waves and beaches.

“Having grown up in Southern California, the beach was my home away from home," said Peirsol. “I'm really excited to be working with Surfrider Foundation to help promote the importance of protecting our beach and coastal areas.”
