No Surprise: Kenyon Collects 26th Straight Division III Men's Crown -- March 19, 2005

HOLLAND, Mich., March 19. LIKE we didn't know where this was headed. As expected, Kenyon College wrapped up its 26th consecutive Division III men's title Saturday night, and added another chapter to its storied history.

The Lords, who have won every Division III championship since 1980, collected 556.5 points to easily outdistance Emory (404.5) and Johns Hopkins (329). Williams (254.5) and Denison (249) rounded out the top five in the team standings.

En route to its latest win, Kenyon received a boost in the 200 breaststroke from the tandem of Davis Zarins and Joseph Gosselar. Leading a one-two finish, Zarins took top honors in the event with a time of 2:00.36. The duo also went one-two in the 100 breast.

Elliott Rushton also aided the Kenyon cause, as he checked in with a meet-record swim in the 1,650 freestyle. Rushton hit the wall in 15:15.64. To punctuate matters, the foursome of Andrejs Duda, Russell Hunt, James Berger and Thomas Ashby went 3:02.49 to win the final event, the 400 free relay.

Earlier in the meet, Rushton came through with triumphs in the 500 freestyle and 400 individual medley. His win in the 500 free was earned in a Division III record mark of 4:22.95.

Although it was disqualified in the 200 medley relay, Kenyon still managed heavy success in the relay events, as it posted four wins in team action. Emory was the victor in the 200 medley relay.

Duda was a major factor in the Kenyon avalanche, as he added a second-place finish in the 200 back on the last night. He had already earned wins in the 100 fly and 200 individual medley.

On the final night of action, other victories were secured by Emory's Chris Halstead in the 200 backstroke (1:48.98), Union's Elliot Seguin in the 100 freestyle (45.32) and Carnegie-Mellon's Chris Pearson in the 200 butterfly (1:49.56). Pearson's distance-fly triumph complemented a win earlier in the meet in the 200 freestyle.
