FINA Fines Gary Hall Jr. For Appealing -- June 15, 1999

On May 28, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland, upheld the three-month suspension of U.S. Olympic swim star, Gary Hall Jr., for marijuana use.

Swimming World has learned that there was more to the decision, not announced by CAS. In a chilling precedent, CAS has fined Hall 10,000 Swiss francs (about $8,000) for appealing FINA's original decision. Hall's father, Dr. Gary Hall, Sr., M.D., commented: "It is outrageous that CAS would fine someone for exercising his legal rights. We have absolutely no intention of paying the fine."
