Kenyon Women Defeat Oberlin, Cincinnati; Fall to Miami of Ohio

GAMBIER, Ohio, January 17. WITH a split squad taking on three teams simultaneously, the Kenyon College women’s swimming and diving team wrapped up a busy Friday afternoon by collecting two of three possible victories.

At home in the Ernst Center, the Ladies defeated Oberlin College, 134-83. At the same time in Oxford, Ohio, the rest of the Ladies finished off the University of Cincinnati, 126-71, but fell to host Miami University, 170-65.

The Ladies (4-7) looked to a trio of young swimmers to take care of business at home against the Yeowomen. First-year swimmers Evelyn Volz (Austin, TX/St. Stephen’s) and Lauren Goettsch (Austin, MN/Austin), as well as junior Carly Chornobil (Rochester, NY/Brighton) each responded with two individual wins for Kenyon. Volz was victorious in the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.31) and 200-yard freestyle (2:03.25). Goettsch took the 50-yard freestyle (25.94) and 100-yard freestyle (57.80), while Chornobil followed up with first-place finishes in the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.66) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:16.14). That trio also helped the Ladies win the 200-yard medley relay (1:55.58).

In Oxford, junior Rachel Smith (Charles City, IA/Charles City) had an excellent meet against Division I competition. Smith won the 500-yard freestyle (5:06.30) and then finished third in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Those two performances were among the Ladies’ seven, top-three finishes.

Sophomore Jessica Connors (Cedarburg, WI/Divine Savior Holy Angels) boosted the Ladies’ point total with a second-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:24.05) and a third-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley (2:11.79). Connors’ classmate, Rebecca Allison (Paradise Valley, AZ/Phoenix Country Day), added a second-place showing in the 200-yard backstroke (2:05.93).

In relay competition, the Ladies tacked on a win in the 400-yard freestyle event (2:08.47) and a third-place performance in the 400-yard medley (4:03.48).
