Form Holds For Longhorns and Host Bulldogs as Texas Men and Georgia Women Win -- January 16, 2005
ATHENS, GA, January 16. THE University of Texas men's and women’s swimming and diving teams competed against Georgia at the Gabrielsen Natatorium on Saturday and the seventh-ranked men’s squad came out with a 152.5–147.5 win, while the fifth-ranked women’s squad dropped its first dual meet of the season, falling to the top-ranked Lady Bulldogs, 165-133, per reports from Longhorn sources.
With the win, Texas’ men team improves to 2-3 in dual meets this season, while the women fall to 5-1. The victory for the men’s team marked its sixth-straight over the Bulldogs.
Senior All-American Nathan O'Brien (Sammamish, Wash.) was a double-winner for a well-balanced Longhorn attack that saw seven different swimmers post individual wins.
After sophomore Garrett Weber-Gale (Fox Point, Wis.) earned the win in the 100-yard freestyle by posting a time of 45.39, O'Brien followed his lead in the 200-yard backstroke, winning in 1:48.12, with freshman Caleb McDermott (Canyon Lake, Texas) helping Texas finish 1-2 in that race, clocking a time of 1:48.84.
Texas’ strong racing continued in the 200-yard breaststroke with freshman Matthew Lowe (La Jolla, Calif.) and junior Christian Schurr (Austin, Texas) taking the top two spots. Following a runner-up finish from freshman Matthew McGinnis (Raleigh, N.C.) in the 500-yard freestyle, senior Daniel DiToro (Scottsdale, Ariz.), freshman Daniel Rohleder (Austin, Texas) and senior Rainer Kendrick (Birmingham, Ala.) swept the top three spots in the 100-yard butterfly.
Texas got off to a fast start winning Saturday’s first event, the 200-yard medley relay in 1:30.13.
After Georgia’s Robert Margalis captured the mile, freshman McGinnis and seniors Andrew Davidson (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) and Schurr swept the next three events. McGinnis clocked an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:37.58 to win the 200-yard freestyle, Davidson edged out Rohleder in the 100-yard backstroke with times of 49.22 and 49.59, respectively, and Schurr posted a win in the 100-yard breaststroke in 55.97.
In women’s action, freshman Hayley McGregory (Houston, Texas) swept both backstroke events, notching NCAA provisional qualifying times in each, while sophomore Elizabeth Tinnon (Bowling Green, Ky.) won both the 100- and 200-yard breaststrokes with NCAA automatic qualifying times in each.
Senior Sarah Wanezek (Brookfield, Wis.) rounded out the individual event winners on the day for the Longhorns, capturing the top spot in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.89.
The Texas women capped off Saturday’s competition with a win the in 200-yard freestyle relay, with sophomore Katie Robinson (Dillsboro, Ind.), McGregory, junior Jennifer Robbins (Atlanta, Ga.) and senior Michelle Molina (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) teaming to post a time of 1:35.52.
The University of Texas men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams are back in action on Jan. 28-29, when they host Arizona and Southern Methodist at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center.
