Chris Colwill Claims Platform on Day Three of Georgia Diving Invitational -- January 6, 2005
ATHENS, GA, January 6. THE 2005 Georgia Diving Invitational concluded Wednesday at the Gabrielsen Natatorium in Athens, as sophomore Chris Colwill won his fourth event of the three-day meet by claiming top honors in the platform competition, per Bulldog reports.
Colwill, who won the 1-meter springboard and a pair of evening shootouts, was the lone Georgia representative on the men's side in the platform event. He amassed a total score of 546.80 to win the event by a mere 3.80 points ahead of runner-up Matt Bricker from Auburn. Colwill won four of the five men's contests and finished second in the fifth event at this year's invitational.
"Chris did a good job again today," said Georgia diving coach Dan Laak. "He is a little under the weather, but he really stepped up and performed today. His score would have put him in the top eight at NCAAs.
"Chris had a great weekend overall," added Laak. "I am pleased with his progress."
On the women's side, sophomores Emily Hunter and Sara Hershman carried the load for the Lady Bulldogs. Hunter finished with an overall score of 366.65 to claim seventh place, while Hershman's score of 323.95 earned her a ninth-place finish.
"We are still not where we want to be with tower," said Laak of the Lady Bulldogs' performance. "We are doing pretty well on the springboards, so tower will be a point of focus for the next month."
Purdue's Carrie McCambridge won the women's platform event with a score of 407.35.
"I thought overall the meet went great," offered Laak. "The diving was pretty good for this time of the year, and I think everyone had a great time. I think they will all come back, so I think that is a great sign."
The Georgia swimming and diving team will be back in action Friday, Jan. 7, as the men and women host conference foe Alabama at noon at Gabrielsen Natatorium. Admission is free of charge.
