Biagioli and Rodriguez Set National Records at Argentina Long Course National Champs

By Jorge Aguado

PHOENIX, December 1. TWO national records were set at the Argentina National Long Course Championships, held December 16-19, 2004, at the 50-meter pool at the Centro Nacional de Alto Rudimiento (CENDAR) in Buenos Aires.

Cecilia Biagioli clocked a swift 4:13.45 in the women's 400 meter freestyle while Gaston Rodriguez powered to a 2:02.64 for his record-setting swim in the men's 200m fly.

Biagioli also won the 200 free in 2:03.91 while Rodriguez picked up a second win in the 400 IM in 4:36.72.

There were several other outstanding swims in the four-day meet. Kristel Kobrich, a 19 year-old Chilean who finished six seconds behind Biagioli in the 400 free, had everything her way in the 800 and 1500-meter events, winning with ease in the very strong times of 8:47.44 and 16:38.83.

Georgina Bardach, a bronze medalist at the 2004 Olympic Games, dominated the women's medleys, winning as she pleased in 2:16.26 in the 200 and 4:56.28 in the 400.

Former world sprint champion Jose Meolans, 28, took both the 50 and 100 free, touching first in 23.61 and 51.18, though pressed all the way.

Veteran Eduardo Otero was victorious in the men's 100m fly in 54.90.
