PARK RIDGE, Ill., DEC. 10. THE Big Ten Conference announced this week that University of Michigan junior Peter Vanderkaay (Rochester, Mich./Adams HS) has been named the Big Ten Men's Swimmer of the Week for his performance at the Texas Invitational, per Wolverine reports.

It marks Vanderkaay's seventh career weekly award and the first of the 2004-05 season.

Vanderkaay led the ninth-ranked Wolverines to a fourth-place finish at
the Texas Invitational in a 12-team field that included No. 2 Southern
Cal, No. 4 California and No. 8 Texas.

Vanderkaay posted four top-three finishes, including a win in the 500-yard freestyle with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 4:15.32. In addition, Vanderkaay set a personal record in the 100-yard freestyle
(44.34) and was a member of five relay teams, including the first-place
800-yard freestyle relay squad that posted an NCAA automatic time of

Vanderkaay earned a pair of Big Ten Swimmer of the Week awards as a
freshman in 2002-03 and picked up four citations as a sophomore last
season. He was also named the Big Ten co-Swimmer of the Year in 2004.

After three weeks off, the Wolverines will head to California for their
winter training. Michigan will square off with Southern Cal and Nova
Aquatics in an exhibition meet before resuming intercollegiate
competition with a meet at Stanford on Jan. 7 in Palo Alto, Calif.
