Wesminster Men and Women Defeat NCAA Division II Foe Ashland -- November 8, 2004
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. November 8.- WESTMINSTER College men's and women's swimming teams each opened the 2004-05 dual meet season on a winning note today at the Natatorium in New Wilmington, per school reports.
The two teams had a non-conference sweep of NCAA Division II Ashland University. The Titan men (1-0) posted a 113-93 victory over the Eagles, while the Lady Titans (1-0) rolled to a 101-58 win over AU.
Leading the Westminster men was triple-winner sophomore Ryan Trunk (Brookline, MA/Cheshire Academy H.S.), who captured both the 100 (49.44) and 200 freestyle (1:48.28) while swimming a leg on the winning Titan 400 medley relay team (3:44.55).
For the Lady Titans, a pair of swimmers were triple winners against the Eagles. Sophomore Megan McLaughlin (Wooster, OH/Wooster H.S.) and freshman Becky Giles (Johnstown/Westmont Hilltop H.S.) both swam legs for the victorious 400 medley relay team (4:15.41), while McLaughlin won both the 50 (25.36) and 200 backstroke (2:18.23) and Giles captured both the 200 IM (2:14.56) and 500 freestyle (5:28.87).
Westminster swimming returns to action next Saturday, Nov. 13, as the Titans and Lady Titans travel to Meadville for a non-league dual meet at local rival Allegheny College beginning at 1 p.m.
