Princeton Swimmer Drowns Off Florida

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla., Nov. 1. ALAN Ebersole, a Princeton University swimmer, drowned in the Atlantic Ocean off South Florida, police said Saturday.

Ebersole, 20, of Vicksburg, Miss., was found early Saturday in the shallow surf about three-quarters of a mile from where he was last seen in the water, according to the Broward County Sheriff's Office.

Ebersole had a broken neck, but the county medical examiner said the cause of death was drowning. Detectives found no signs of foul play and no indication of drugs or alcohol.

Ebersole, a sophomore, was staying with teammates in Deerfield Beach on a training trip during the school's fall break. He and two friends went swimming in the ocean late Friday near their hotel.

His friends came ashore and thought Ebersole had already returned to his room, deputies said. When they noticed his clothes on the beach, they summoned a coach and other swimmers to begin a search.

Alan was a former USA Swimming athlete representative from Mississippi, and was the older brother of current athlete rep., Bern Ebersole.

Bryan Jones, head of the Athletes' Executive Committee, commented: "Our thoughts and prayers go out to Alan’s family as they deal with this tragedy."
