Nittany Lions Open Swimming and Diving Season at WVU Mountaineers

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA, October 15. PENN State opened its men's and women's swimming and diving 2004-05 slate with a dual meet versus West Virginia 5 p.m. Thursday. Results to follow.

This is the earliest that the Nittany Lions have ever opened their seasons.

The Penn State women, which finished 8-1 last season, are shooting to improve upon a second place finish at the Big Ten Championships and a 15th-place at the NCAA Championships. They return seven All-Americans from the 2003-04 team.

Junior Amberle Biedermann (Colorado Springs, Colo.), senior Deirdre Dlugonski (Washington, Pa.), junior Sarah Haupt (Carlisle, Pa.) and senior Kristen Woodring (Sinking Spring, Pa.) are all returning All-Americans. Sophomore Margy Keefe (Cincinnati, Ohio), sophomore Erin Morris (Ft. Wayne, Ind.) and sophomore Megan Palera (Santa Maria, Calif.) are all returning honorable mention All-Americans.

The Penn State men finished 4-5 on the dual meet season last year. They finished seventh at the Big Ten Championships and should improve on that finish with a strong core coming back, with the addition of an impressive freshmen class. Senior Dustin Thompson (Munster, Ind.), senior Daryl Northrop (Verona, N.J.) and senior Mark Zucca (Hudson, Ohio) will lead the Nittany Lions into the 2004-05 season.
