Short Course World Champs, Day 2: Aussie Brooke Hanson Leads Qualifiers for 100 IM -- October 8, 2004

INDIANAPOLIS, October 8. AFTER years of frustration, 26 year-old Australia Brooke Hanson has been on a two-year roll.

She picked up momentum earlier this evening by nipping teammate Jade Edmistone by one-hundredth of a second in the 50 breast, which gave her even more confidence for the semifinals of the 100 IM.

Third-fastest after the fly and back legs, and six-tenths of a second behind Slovakia’s Martina Moravcova, Hanson blitzed her opponents on the breaststroke leg, then came storming home to qualify first for tomorrow’s final in 1:00.04.

Moravcova was second in 1:01.16 with the USA’s Amanda Beard third in 1:01.29 and Katie Hoff sixth in 1:01.72.

It took a 1:02.47 to make the final eight.
