Gopher Captains Include Summer Nationals Star Justin Mortimer

MINNEAPOLIS, MN, October 6. THE University of Minnesota men's swimming and diving head coach Dennis Dale announced the 2004-05 team captains earlier this week.

Seniors Sean McCaffrey, Justin Mortimer and Neil Osten will share the duties for the defending Big Ten champions.

After taking the 2003-04 season off from collegiate competition, Mortimer returns to the team. During his departure, he recently won national titles in the 200, 800 and 1500meter freestyles and the 400 individual medley at the Summer National Championships in Palo Alto, Calif. Mortimer is a nine-time All-American at Minnesota. He is a native of Milton, Mass.

McCaffrey, a sprint freestyle specialist, is a two-time All-American in the 800 freestyle relay. The Evanston, Ill. native finished seventh in the 200 freestyle at the 2004 Big Ten Championships.

Osten, a two-time All-American, is a sprint freestyle and butterfly specialist. He owns the seventh-fastest time in school history in the 100 butterfly and swam legs of Minnesota's 2003 Big Ten champion 200 free relay team and 2004 conference champion 400 free relay team. He is a native of Verona, Wis.

The Gophers open the regular season schedule at Florida on October 29. They will hold the annual intrasquad meet on October 16 at the University Aquatic Center. Minnesota hosts the 2005 Big Ten Championships February 24-26 and the NCAA Championships March 24-26 at the University Aquatic Center.
