Banks Back as Boss of Brandon Blue

BRANDON, FLA, October 2. PETER Banks returns to the Brandon Sports & Aquatic Center as Head Coach of Blue Wave Swimming and Director of Sports Development. His return is tentatively set for 11-01-04, according to reports from the Center.

Banks coached the Brandon Blue Wave swim team from 1990 until late 2000. Under his direction, Blue Wave had extensive success. Olympians Brooke Bennett and Maritza Correia trained under Banks and several other swimmers represented the team at the Olympic Trials, the World Championships, as well as Junior Nationals and Senior Nationals.

During his tenure more than 35 of his swimmers made it to the junior or senior national finals and many of his athletes were recipients of swimming scholarships to many major universities. Banks has been and will remain an active member of American Swim Coaches Association(ASCA) and will be coaching the United States National Team in January.

“We are very excited to have Peter come back,” executive director Rich Haskins said. “Having Peter here will be a fantastic addition to the swim program and it will also help to strengthen our ties to the international swimming community.”

The Blue Wave swim team at the Brandon Sports and Aquatic Center (BSAC) has an incredible history, having produced swimmers who have won three Olympic titles, three World Championship titles and 27 NCAA Championships.

The Blue Wave team trains year-round, competing in approximately 15 meets per year. Swimmers train in groups based on age and level of proficiency.

Blue Wave is currently under the direction Laura Ghilik-Micu who will become Associate Head Coach under Banks. Ghilik is a certified level V coach through the American Swim Coaches Association (ASCA). Mio Vasic will serve as the Blue Wave assistant coach. Vasic is a certified level III coach through ASCA, and looks forward to getting his level IV certification in the near future.
