Sweden Names Team for World Championships

MALMO, Sweden, October 1, WORLD record holders Therese Alshammar and Anna Karin Kammerling highlight a squad of six men and 12 women who will represent Sweden at the 2004 FINA Short Court World Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana October 7-11, 2004.

At the Grand Prix 3 selection meet (SC), Kammerling showed she is in fine form for her specialty 50 Butterfly with a :25.90, only .54 outside her global mark, scoring 980 FINA rating points.

Kammerling’s total trailed only fellow butterflyer Johanna Sjoberg, whose :57.70 was good for 984 points, just 1.36 from Natalie Coughlin’s world standard. Both appear ready to challenge for medals-you choose the color—at this month’s championship.

Alshammar, 50 and 100 short course world record holder, was not in the Malmo event but was apparently chosen based on earlier performances.

The top male performance came from sprinter Stefan Nystrand who popped for 972 points in the 50 freestyle at :21.62.
