Tough Guy Steven Pursley Does Double Duty -- September 9, 2004
PHOENIX, Ariz., September 9. STEVEN Pursley likes having things “both” ways, according to reports by Richard Obert in yesterday's Arizona Republic.
It must be the tough guy example of dad Dennis Pursley, former USA Swimming National Team Director and present coach of the Brophy East Swim Team, a USA Swimming club. Or maybe the inspiration comes from the lead of his older brother, who is state champion in the two toughest events in the high school swimming program, a fall affair in Arizona.
In any event, it's rare to find a high school football player swimming laps hours before a game on Fridays. But Brophy Prep starting fullback Steven Pursley is an exception. The sophomore is also on the perennial state champion swim team. That's one of the hardest doubles to combine during a season.
Apparently it works for Pursley, whose brother, David, a senior swimmer, won state 5A titles last season in the 200-yard individual medley and 500 freestyle. Brophy swim coach Bil Kopas said he takes it easy on the younger Pursley on Fridays. "He worked out Friday and did almost the whole workout," Kopas said.
"He had to go to the football luncheon, then get ready for Mountain Ridge." Pursley helped the Broncos upset then No. 3-ranked Mountain Ridge in football. He is expected to be one of the state's top 50-yard freestylers. "He's strong as an ox," Kopas said.
