US Nationals Begin on Tuesday at Stanford University

STANFORD, Calif., August 1. FOR the first time since 1986, the USA Swimming ConocoPhillips National Championships are returning to the Bay Area. This year also marks the first time the meet has been held at Stanford’s Avery Aquatic Center.

"USA Swimming is excited to bring its National Championships to the Avery Aquatic Center and Stanford University," USA Swimming’s National Events Director Dean Ekeren said. "Avery Aquatic Center is one of the finest facilities in the country, and many local people have worked hard to insure the event is a success. We expect some great performances at this event."

Over 800 US athletes are participating in the meet, as well as teams from France and Mexico.

Some of the top names expected to compete in the meet are 2000 Olympic champion Misty Hyman and National Team members Staciana Stitts, Randall Bal and Shelly Ripple Johnston

A 2000 Olympian and Cal graduate, Stitts will compete in the 100m breaststroke. Stitts recently competed in the 100m and 200m breaststrokes at the 2004 Olympic Trials in Long Beach, Calif., finishing fourth and fifth in those events, respectively.

Stanford graduates Bal and Ripple Johnston are also on the meet roster. Bal, the 2001 World champion in the 50m back, finished fourth in the 100m back at the Olympic Trials. He is the top seed in the 100m back at Nationals and will also be swimming the 50m and 100m free.

A member of USA Swimming’s 2001 World championships team, Ripple Johnston has entered the 100m free, the 200m fly, the 200m free, the 100m fly, the 200m IM and the 50m free.

Local standout Brooke Bishop, who swims for Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics, will swim the 100m free, the 100m back and the 50m free.
