Hansen Lowers Trials Record in 200 Breaststroke -- July 10, 2004 Brendan Hansen was well ahead of Ed Moses going into the 100 turn of the 200 Breast in the semi-finals

By John Lohn

LONG BEACH, Calif., July 10. IN cruise control, Brendan Hansen easily qualified first for the championship heat of the 200-meter breaststroke, as the 22-year-old went 2:10.76, well under the Trials record (2:13.08), which he set in the morning preliminaries.

Hansen led the entire race and comfortably maneuvered through the water for the second-fastest time of his career, trailing only the 2:10.69 that won him the 2001 world championship in Fukuoka, Japan. Hansen should give the world record (2:09.42) a scare in tomorrow's finals. Earlier in the competition, Hansen blasted the global standard in the 100 breast, behind a time of 59.30.

Scott Usher won the first semifinal and qualified second in 2:13.19. Usher qualified ahead of Mark Gangloff (2:13.99), Gary Marshall (2:14.60) and Ed Moses (2:15.00). Moses, a 2000 Olympian, has been saddled by illness and swimming well off his typical times.

Dave Denniston (2:15.27) qualified in sixth while Ethan Bassett (2:16.19) and Ryan Hurley (2:16.41), representing Curl-Burke Swim Club, were seventh and eighth. Including Moses, Curl-Burke sent three athletes to the finals.

PREDICTION: Hansen sets his second world record of the competition, while Usher qualifies for his first Olympic team, finishing just ahead of Gangloff.
