Sun Devil Water Polo Garners Academic Accolades for 2004 Season

TEMPE, Ariz. – Eight members of the Arizona State water polo team were honored with academic honors June 18 as both the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) and the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA)released their respective all-academic selections. Four of the selected Sun Devils, which as a team earned national recognition for its overall efforts, appear on both lists.

At the conclusion of their first season as members of the MPSF the Sun Devils placed six members of the team on the lists. Elaine Bentley (So., San Diego, Calif.), Lauren Jacobson (Jr., League City, Texas), Adriane Mota (So., Long Beach, Calif.), Holly Newman (So., San Diego, Calif.), Heather Rempfer (So., Lodi, Calif.) and Tessa Wyborny (So., Walnut Creek, Calif.) all earned the honor from the MPSF for having a 3.0 or better grade point average while competing in more than half of the team's contests and holding a sophomore standing or higher in school.

On the national level, there are three tiers of honor and are separated by grade point averages. The distinction of 'outstanding' is given to student-athletes with a GPA of 4.00-3.71 while 3.70-3.41 earns 'superior' and 3.40-3.20 is 'excellent.' For the third season in a row for the third-year program, at least one Sun Devil has earned a spot on the 'outstanding' tier with four earning 'superior' and one earning 'excellent' status. Not only did Ashley Bower (Fr., Bondi Beach, Australia) garner a position on the 'outstanding' team, she also was one of the national leaders as one of three players with a perfect 4.00 GPA. Wyborny, Jennifer Sanderson (Jr., Walnut Creek, Calif.), Jacobson and Rempfer each earned a 'superior' rating while Mota earned 'excellent' status.

As a team, ASU built a 2.98 cumulative GPA to become one of 32 squads to earn team recognition from the CWPA. Their GPA ranks them 25th in the nation and marks the second season in a row in which the Sun Devils have appeared on the team lists.
