Auburn Continues To Lead SEC Championships -- February 28, 2004

ATHENS, Ga, February 27. AUBURN continues to hold the lead in both the women's and men's team standings at the Southeastern Conference Swimming and Diving Championships being held at Gabrielsen Natatorium.

The Auburn women will head into the final day with 634 points, followed by Georgia with 556 and Florida with 530. The Auburn men have accumulated 790 points, followed by Florida with 559 and Georgia with 385.

The Lady Bulldogs' Friday night got off to a good start as the team of Neka Mabry, Sarah Poewe, Andrea Georoff and Paige Kearns won the women's 200-yard medley relay. Georgia took the title with a time of 1:38.99.

"It's awesome," Georoff said. "It went so fast. I don't even remember the race; that's how amazing it was."

Auburn's team of Ryan Wochomurka, Mark Gangloff, Fred Bousquet and Derek Gibb won the men's 200-yard medley relay with a pool-record time of 1:25.40, eclipsing the old mark of 1:25.47 set by Texas. Georgia's team of Peter Osborn, Scott Gardner, Peter Verhoef and Josh Laban came in fourth.

Quotes From SEC Day 3:

Women’s 200-yard medley relay Champion
Georgia (Neka Mabry and Andrea Georoff)“It was a great race. Auburn has great competitors. It feels good for us. Yeah, the fans helped a lot.”“It’s awesome. It went so fast. I don’t even remember the race, that’s how amazing it was.”

Women’s 200-yard medley relay runner-up
Auburn (Eileen Coparoppa)“Georgia had a great strategy and they swam awesome. That’s the SEC, I mean, the competition here is the best, this kind of close race is what we all expect every single race.”

Men’s 200-yard medley relay Champion
Auburn (Mark Gangloff)“It was a lot of fun out there, being my first time on a relay. These guys did great. We were so close to the SEC record, we did really good.”

Men’s 200-yard medley relay runner-up
Florida (Ansel Tgin-A-Tan)“We were pleased with the race, I think we had one of the best times in school history and we got some guys to make “A” cut, so overall it went pretty well.”

Women’s 200-yard butterfly runner-up
Demerae Christianson, Auburn“I just wanted to do my best to help the team score. That’s what I care about.”(on competing with multiple butterfly winner Mary DeScenza) “It’s always a privilege to swim against the best in the country. It just makes you a better swimmer. (DeScenza)’s probably one of the best butterfliers in the nation right now. It’s just a privilege.”

Men’s 200-yard butterfly Champion
Jeremy Knowles, Auburn“Last year I finished second and to come in this year and finish first was great. I felt really good, I changed stategy from this afternoon when I didnt do as well as I had hoped, I decided to just swim strong and see what happened and it worked.”

Men’s 200-yard butterfly runner-up
Daniel Cruz, Kentucky“I wanted to get my best time, and I did. I’m real happy about the race. I swam the way I wanted.”(on his finish helping his team)”Hopefully it’ll be a good confidence boost going into the relays. Kentucky’s never had an individual SEC champion, but we have a number two seed, Steven Manley, in the 200 (yard) freestyle, so hopefully this will give us some confidence, and he’ll be able to do it for the team.”

Women’s 200-yard freestyle Champion
Margaret Hoelzer, Auburn“I’ve been a little more of a backstroker, but now I feel pretty equal in both the backstroke and freestyle. The freestyle was nice, I had a lot of fun with it.”

Women’s 200-yard freestyle runner-up
Jenn Van Assen, South Carolina“I’m so happy with this the race, I didn’t have any rest coming into it so I didn’t really know what to expect but I swam my best time, everything just turned out really great. I am just so excited about qualifying for the NCAAs.”

Men’s 200-yard freestyle Champion
George Bovell, Auburn“I’m actually very pleased. I have wanted to make this one of my best events. My pet event is the 200 (Individual Medley). I’m very happy with this one.”

Men’s 200-yard freestyle runner-up
Adam Sioui, Florida“I’m not real happy with the finish. Number one is the goal. NCAA’s and Olympic trials are coming up, so I’ve got to go back to Gainesville and work on things.”

Women’s 200-yard breaststroke Champion
Vipa Bernhardt, Florida“It felt very good to win here, the crowd was really into it, its a great atmosphere, it’s fabulous. I swam exactly how I had hoped it was a really good race for me.”

Women’s 200-yard breaststroke runner-up
Sarah Poewe, Georgia“The night started awesome for us with the 400 relay. We’re really excited right now.”“It must have been hard having to race the relay and then this, but I’m not making excuses. I’m happy with the swim. I’m capable of going faster now.”(on relationship to Vipa Bernhardt of Florida)”It’s funny because she’s on the national team with me for Germany, so we’re getting used to opposing each other to prepare for that. It’s good to know her tactics.”

Men’s 200-yard breaststroke Champion
Marc Gangloff, Auburn“I had a good race, Kyle (Salyards) always offers some really good competition and it just turned out to be an awesome race.”

Men’s 200-yard breaststroke runner-up
Kyle Salyards, Georgia“I feel pretty good about today. It wasn’t the best, but it was a good SEC time. I’m not personally having a great meet. I’m just trying to get out there and really race tough.”(on not attaining a third-straight SEC title) “It’s a little disappointing to not get the third one, but the ultimate goal is getting guys qualified into the NCAA meet. Right now, that’s our real focus.”

Women’s 200-yard backstroke Champion
Kirsty Coventry, Auburn“I was able to come in and do what I planned today.”“I did feel some fatigue in my arms and legs in the last 50, but I was able to pull through.”

Women’s 200-yard backstroke runner-up
Maureen Farrell, Florida“Me and Leah (Retrum - Florida) wanted to do something together. We wanted to go one and two. But we both swam good races, and two and three is good, too. I went a little faster this morning, and I’m swimming some relays later on, so I need to get some rest.”

Men’s 200-yard backstroke Champion
Bryce Hunt, Auburn“(The win) felt really good. I knew all year this was the race I wanted to win. To beat Chris (Kellam - Florida) and my other teammates, it was a really satisfying victory.”

Men’s 200-yard backstroke runner-up
Chris Kellam, Florida“I came in really prepared, but it just wasn’t good enough tonight. Bryce (Hunt) has been doing this for four years and he is always a good race, he is a really great swimmer.”

Men’s Platform Diving Champion
Caesar Garcia, Auburn“It’s a great feeling to win as winning always is, but what was better was my teammates were right there behind me. I know I am leaving great teammates behind, a freshman and a junior.”“I knew I could nail my last dive, that’s why I saved it for last, and thankfully, I pulled it out.”

Men’s Platform Diving runner-up
Matt Bricker, Auburn“I’m just glad to be back on 10 meter. Last year, I had a shoulder injury and I didn’t even compete at the SECs. Then, prior to this meet I had an abdominal muscle pull. I’m just happy to rehab and get better.”(on dive that scored 9.5s and 10s)”That’s why I didn’t do three meter. I knew I could get a 10 on that dive. It’s just about body memory and muscle memory.”

Women’s 200-yard freestyle relay Champion
Auburn (Eileen Coparropa)“It was a great relay. Georgia has just such great swimmers. It’s a victory, but at the same time, just knowing that we’re competing against the best of the best is awesome.”

Women’s 200-yard freestyle relay runner-up
Georgia (Kara Lynn Joyce)“My main goal was to get as big as lead as possible for the team, we knew it would be close with Auburn. They have a really good team, so every little bit helps.”“Finishing strong today gives up momentum for tomorrow. We are more ready now.”“There is definitly a big rivalry with Auburn. We will see how things go tomorrow. Hopefully, we will be ablt to pull things out”

Men’s 200-yard freestyle relay Champion
Auburn (George Bovell and Derek Gibb)“We’ve been having big dreams for this relay. We just fed off the energy of the crowd.”“We go after each other every single day. This is what it’s all about.”

Men’s 200-yard freestyle relay runner-up
Florida (Ryan Lochte)“We were in the first heat and it was hard because we didn’t have a lot of competition. Overall, we’re in perfect shape and that was a great time.”

Georgia Head Coach Jack Bauerle
“We’re about where we thought we would be tonight. We had to try to chase them down (Auburn). Kara Lynn’s situation (her disqualification) this morning really took the wind out of our sails and sort gave Florida a lift, but we recovered well from it and finished up strong.”On the men’s side, we were really off this morning. I mean really off. This afternoon, we sort of got back on track and added a lot of guys to the NCAA meet, so that’s a big positive. Tomorrow, we just have to try to finsih it off.”

Auburn Head Coach David Marsh (on 200 freestyle relay NCAA record)
”To have the fastest time in the history of the sport, it’s just exciting.”
