NCAA Water Polo: Stanford Loses Lead, Falls To UCLA, 6-4 -- October 27, 1998

STANFORD, CA - Blake Wellen scored two second-half goals, including the game winner with 2:30 to play to lift third-ranked UCLA to a come-from-behind 6-4 victory over fourth-ranked Stanford at deGuerre Pool.

Stanford jumped to a 2-0 on a two-point goal by Layne Beaubien with 4:12 left in the first period. Pasi Dutton scored a goal with 47 seconds left in the second period to extend Stanford's lead to 3-1 at halftime.

UCLA then outscored Stanford, 3-0, in the third period to take a 4-3 lead. Beaubien scored his third point of the game to tie the game at 4-4 with 5:22 to play. But Wellen scored his second goal of the game at 2:30 to play to give the Bruins the lead for good. Sean Kern added an insurance goal with 1:48 to play.

The victory upped UCLA's overall record to 12-2, while the Cardinal fell to 14-4.
