Florida Gators Sweep Tennessee

KNOXVILLE, Tenn., February 1. THE No. 4 women's swimming and diving team and the No. 5 men's team swept Tennessee Saturday afternoon in the final dual meet of the season. The women (11-2, 5-2 SEC) handed the Lady Vols a 129-103 loss and the men (9-2, 5-1 SEC) gave No. 13 UT a 129-109 loss. The women's team won or swam the fastest time in eight of the 13 events. Florida posted one NCAA automatic qualifying time, three provisional times and three NCAA Diving Zones qualifying scores.

Women’s Meet
“We’ve been telling the team all week to go into this meet with an open mind,” Colella said. “They swam tough against the No. 2-ranked program in the country and did a great job of standing up and racing. [Megan] Tomes was awesome today. She came from behind to win the 200y freestyle and that was a huge effort. Even though we don’t like to lose, we can’t be totally disappointed. Florida swam all over us last year and they didn’t do that to us in this meet.”

Parrington’s divers opened the meet in fine fashion by amassing 11 points for the Big Orange. Junior Lauryn McCalley (Moultrie, Ga.) posted a season-high 300.97 to capture the one-meter springboard title. Florida followed up with a pair of NCAA Zone B qualifying marks from Nicole Bolt (284.84) and Kristen Connor (281.39). Senior Kylee Wells (Russiaville, Ind.) turned in a qualifier of her own with a fourth-place 257.55, while freshman Brittany Fulmer (Maryville, Tenn.) took sixth with a 222.52.

The Florida quartet of Leah Retrum, Jaime Ellis, Vipa Bernhardt and Mary Uhle captured the event crown with a 1:44.94 clocking in the 200y medley relay. Florida also posted a second-place 1:50.49 by the team of Sara McLarty, Mandy Huff, Danielle Duncan and Christine Woodruff. The Lady Vols finished in third place with a 1:53.46 by junior Jessica Blevins (Bluefield, W.Va.), junior Kristin McGrath (Durango, Colo.), freshman Julia Lutz (Lilburn, Ga.) and freshman Sarah Ridgway (St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands).

Florida swam well in the individual event opening 1,000y freestyle as Meredith Green took the event title with a 9:53.80, Katie Bell finished in second place with a 9:56.30 and Jamie Tannhauser took third with a 10:02.31. For the Lady Vols, freshman Misty Cain (Marietta, Ga.) posted a fifth-place 10:26.89, while junior Elizabeth Wueste (Norcross, Ga.) took sixth with an 11:21.07.

In the 200y freestyle, Tomes secured another event title with a 1:49.45 in the 200y freestyle. The 200y free featured three NCAA provisional qualifiers: UT’s Tomes, Florida’s McLarty (1:49.53) and Brittany Johnson (1:50.09). Freshman Elizabeth Christy (Indianapolis, Ind.) took fifth place with a 1:54.65, while freshman Megan Keefer (Fort Wayne, Ind.) finished in seventh with a 1:57.41. Ridgway swam an exhibition 2:05.34 in the event. In the 50y freestyle, UF’s Ellis took the title with a 23.70, while Tennessee sophomore Abbi Terveer (Lima, Ohio) took second with a 23.96. UT senior Taryn Ternent (Edenvale, South Africa) registered a fourth-place 24.18, while sophomore Tatiana Athayde (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) took sixth place with a 25.35. Blevins swam an exhibition 25.51 in the event.

In the 200y IM, Florida extended its lead by claiming the top-three spots as Bernhardt posted a provisional with a 2:03.23, Ashley Carusone took second with a 2:05.73 and Connor finished in third with a 2:07.05. UT sophomore Betsy Brockman (Batavia, Ohio) recorded a fourth-place finish with a 2:07.55 clocking, while freshman Tiffany Clay (Mason, Ohio) took fifth with a 2:09.16. Sophomore Graciela Breece-Rodriguez (Boulder, Colo.) ended up in seventh with a 2:09.53, while sophomore Randi Vogel (Maineville, Ohio) turned in a 2:10.24 in exhibition.

The swim squad then took time to watch Parrington’s divers take center stage on the three-meter springboard. McCalley hit the ninth-best sequence of dives in the 3m in Tennessee history. McCalley claimed the event title with a season-high 321.52. Florida’s Connor took second place with a zone qualifying 275.10, while Bolt finished in third place for the Gators with a 268.05. Wells posted a fourth-place 258.02 in her final dives before a home audience, while Fulmer put together a career-high 213.67 for sixth place.

“I am very pleased with Lauryn’s performance today,” Parrington said. “She scored well on both events. She was steady against some quality competition and was able to get up for the events. Kylee did some things well and bounced back from a couple tough meets, while Brittany showed more confidence and her scores were not indicative of the good things she did today.”

After returning to the swim portion of the schedule, Florida’s Rebecca Harper posted a provisional in the 200y butterfly with a 2:01.34 to claim the event title. The Gators captured the top-three spots in the event as Casey Seland took second with a 2:04.62 and Meredith Green finished in third with a 2:06.60. UT’s Brockman clocked a fourth-place 2:07.29, while Breece-Rodriguez took sixth with a 2:08.11. Lutz ended up in seventh with a 2:11.79. In the 100y freestyle, Tomes’ string of seven straight event triumphs came to an end as Florida’s Mary Uhle claimed the event title with a 51.39. Tomes took runner-up status with a 51.73, while Christy finished in fifth with a 53.16. Keefer rounded out the UT effort in the 100y free with a 55.41. In the event, UF’s Chantal Gibney (51.87) and Johnson (52.87) finished in third and fourth, respectively.

Florida’s Retrum notched an automatic qualifier in the 200y backstroke with a 1:58.00. UT sophomore Jacque Fessel (Cincinnati, Ohio) turned in a provisional qualifier in a runner-up effort with a 2:00.62. Florida took third and fourth place with Katie McCann (2:04.57) and Kristen Harris (2:04.79). Tennessee’s Vogel took fifth place with a 2:07.88, while freshman Ashley Yeager (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) finished in seventh with a 2:08.92. Breece-Rodriguez swam to a 2:13.56 exhibition mark. In the 500y freestyle, UF’s Ball posted a provisional in exhibition, while UT’s Cain claimed the event title with a 5:05.64. Wueste took second place with a 5:33.10.

In the 200y breaststroke, Clay captured the event crown with a 2:18.56, while Brockman took second place with a 2:25.81. McGrath clocked a third-place 2:38.38 to round out the Tennessee showing in the 200y breast. Tennessee closed out the meet by claiming the top-two spots in the 200y freestyle relay as the quartet of Terveer, Ternent, Christy and Tomes posted a 1:34.69. The team of Keefer, Athayde, Blevins and Fessel captured second with a 1:39.91, while Ridgway, Yeager, Lutz and Vogel exhibitioned to a 1:42.40.

Men’s Meet
Florida Sophomore Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.) and junior Adam Sioui (Ontario, Canada) each won two events. Lochte touched the wall first in the 200-yard individual medley with a provisional time of 1:48.51, and he also claimed first place the 100-yard freestyle (45.15). The sophomore now has won 20 events this season.

Sioui took first in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:39.74 and won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:50.67.

Senior Chris Kellam (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) won the 200-yard backstroke with a provisional time of 1:46.85, nearly five seconds faster than the runner-up.

Junior Scott Kaufmann (Sparks, Nev.) won the 1,000-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 9:13.44.

The relay team of Kellam, freshman Bill Mrazek (Tallahassee, Fla.), junior Gabriel Mangabeira (Piratininga, Brazil) and senior Scott Schultz (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) won the 400-yard medley relay. However, the times in the event were not correct and cannot be used for qualifying. Team points were still awarded.

Junior Zach Wilcox (Yarrow Point, Wash.) won the one-meter event with a NCAA Diving Zones qualifying score of 345.90. Freshman Justin Schmidt (Falcon, Colo.) had a career-best and zones qualifying score of 308.40, good enough for fourth place.

Wilcox and Schmidt also recorded zone qualifying scores on the three-meter. Wilcox scored a 343.35 for a third-place finish, Schmidt finished in fourth with a score of 316.42.

Tennessee seniors Andrew Bree, Evan Fischer, Jamie Graves, Evan Nylander and Raymond Rosal were honored before the last home meet of the season.

"Florida swam great today," head coach John Trembley said. "They are clearly a top-five team. Raymond (Rosal) showed a lot of spirit today. Casey (Dauw) swam a very nice 500 freestyle for the win and captain Andrew Bree finished a great home career with a win in his specialty."

Rosal ended the last home meet of his career on a high note by out-touching Gabriel Mangabeira in the 50-yard freestyle in 20.87 seconds.

"It was a good swim for the last home meet," Rosal said. "It was a tough meet against a good team, but we did have a couple of strong races."

Bree won his final swim in his home pool by winning the 200 yard-breaststroke in a time of 2:02.33. Bree also finished second in the 200-yard individual medley (1:52.43).

"I enjoyed the meet today," Bree said. "It was good to see the stands full of people and we'll continue to look towards the NCAA championships. The competition was tough today, but hopefully we'll give them a run at the end of the season."

Graves finished second in the 200-yard butterfly behind NCAA champion Adam Sioui of Florida.

Sophomore Bryan Goldberg finished second in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:40.49. Sioui narrowly edged out Goldberg and won the event in 1:39.74. Casey Dauw touched third in 1:40.65.

Dauw turned in the winning time in the 500-yard freestyle (4:31.32), edging Scott Kaufmann of Florida.

Junior Phillip Jones and freshman Jevon Tarantino took the top two spots on the three-meter board. Jones won the event with 388.65 points and topped Tarantino's score of 352.79. The pair also finished two-three in the one-meter event, with Jones taking second behind Florida's Zach Wilcox.

"I was pleased with Phillip's consistency today even though he was beat (in the one-meter) by the defending NCAA champion," Tennessee diving coach Dave Parrington said. "Phil is diving tired as the result of a hectic academic schedule and we are seeing some of the early effects from that. Jevon had a good three-meter and Venditti is showing some good signs of improvement."
