UCLA Tops UCSD 186-108 -- January 17, 2004

LA JOLLA, Calif., January 17. DESPITE excellent efforts from several Triton swimmers, Division I and Pac-10 powerhouse UCLA defeated UCSD, 186-108, in a women’s swimming and diving dual meet at UCSD’s Canyonview Pool on Saturday afternoon.

This was the penultimate home meet for the UCSD women, and one of the final tune-up opportunities heading into the Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference Championships in Long Beach in mid-February and the NCAA Division II National Championships in Buffalo, New York, March 10-13.

Standout swims came from junior Rosanna Delurgio, who won both the 100
(1:04.49) and the 200 (2:18.85) Breaststroke. She was the Tritons’ only event-winner.

Junior co-captain Christine Hyjek raced to a 2:11.06 in the 200 Butterfly, good enough for second place, and finished fourh in the 400 IM with a time of 4:34.07. Freshman Susan Bell (La Jolla/La Jolla HS) clocked a season-best 4:37.49 to finish sixth in the 400 IM.

The diving portion of the meet was held last Saturday afternoon, also in La Jolla, with the Bruins producing a 32-6 advantage prior to the swimming events.

The loss drops UCSD’s dual meet record to 3-4 on the season, with two contests remaining. The Triton women’s swimming and diving team hosts another Division I opponent, crosstown rival University of San Diego, next Saturday afternoon, January 24, to close out the home portion of its 2003-04 schedule. The first race at Canyonview Pool will begin at 12:00 PM.
