Smit Wins Two at New York Girls High School Championships

EAST MEADOW, NY., December 3. JULIA Smit, a sophomore at Mount Sinai High School, won two events at the New York State Girls High School Championships, held at the Nassau Aquatic Center in East Meadow, Long Island. After the competition, she was named the meet's Outstanding Swimmer.

Smit glided to easy victories in the 200-yard individual medley (2:00.81) and the 100 freestyle (50.94). The defending state champion and the state record-holder in the 200 IM, Smit won the event by almost five seconds and still climbed out of the pool disappointed. She wanted to break the two-minute mark or at least improve the record (2:00.54) she set at the sectional meet in November.

"I'll have lots of other chances," Smit said. "I still have two more years of varsity."

In the 100 free Smit, who qualified second behind Libby Snyder (51.52), a senior from Honeoye Falls-Lima, reacted slowly to the starting horn, but quickly pulled in front once she hit the water. She lengthened her lead at every turn, and beat Snyder (51.88) by nearly a second.
