Relatives Of Woman Killed In Olympic Bombing File Suit -- July 25, 1998

ATLANTA, GA - The family of the woman killed in the 1996 Centennial Olympic Park bombing are suing. The suit, seeking unspecified damages, was filed by John D. Hawthorne Jr., the husband of Alice Hawthorne of Albany, and her daughter, Fallon S. Stubbs, 16, one of more than 100 people injured by the bomb July 27, 1996. It claims the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games; AT&T Corp., which bought the rights to the stage area where the bomb went off; and two security companies, Borg-Warner Protective Services Corp. and Anthony Davis Inc. failed to maintain safety. The suit also allows for 25 unknown defendants who planted the bomb. No one has been charged in the bombing. Other bombing victims have sued, but no cases have come to trial. Some were dismissed after ACOG claimed immunity under the Georgia Recreational Property Act of 1965, which encourages property owners to make their land available to the public by limiting liability.
