Sakomoto, Smith Win U.S. 5K National Championships

LORTON, Virginia, August 14. CONDITIONS were ideal for the 5K National Open Water Championships: no winds, no currents and 80 degree water and air.

Noa Sakamoto, 17, won the men's 5K Open Water crown this past Sunday in Lorton, Va. It was the first national title for the Noa, who trains with the Kamehameha Swim Club in Hawaii.

The women’s race was won by Stephanie Smith, 22, from Bengal Tiger Aquatic Club. Stephanie finished in 1:03.06, just ahead of the 14th place male finisher.

The top 18 & Under finisher was Rory Schmidt from Sun Devil Aquatics, in 1:03.35.
