KELOWNA, B.C., Canada, April 21. OREGON Masters swimmer Robert Smith set a world short course record for men 60-64 in a meet in Kelowna, British Columbia, April 11-13.
Smith, 60, a top backstroke and freestyle sprinter for many years, clocked 31.50 for the 50m backstroke, erasing the old mark of 32.56 by Canada's Vinus van Baalen, of the Edmonton Dragon Aquatic Masters, set precisely one year ago. Van Baalen's mark was swum at the 2002 Alberta Provincial Championships in Lethbridge.
The Canadian was second in Kelowna this year with a 33.50.
