Tough On Drugs! -- May 1, 1998

Organizers of the 1998 Commonwealth Games, to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in September, are taking a rather tough stand on illegal drugs. Any athlete caught in the possession of illegal drugs will face the death penalty. Tunku Maziah Mukhtar, a Games official, pledged there would "no compromises" for any competitor. "I don't look forward to the prospect of an athlete being caught," he said, "but there will be no sympathy because no one could say they were unaware of the capital punishment laws beforehand." The list of illegal substances includes performance-enhancing drugs such as steroids, as well as recreational drugs such as marijuana.
