Bucknell Women's Team Wraps Up First-Ever Undefeated Season -- February 14, 2003

LEWISBURG, Pa., February 14. THE Bucknell women's swimming and diving team wrapped up the 2002-03 regular season with a perfect 7-0 record.

For the first time in BU history, the Bison women have accomplished a perfect dual-meet record in the pool. Head coach Jerry Foley has monitored and coached the Bison women to the best season yet in his five-year coaching career at Bucknell.

During the preseason poll, Bucknell's women's swimming and diving team had been tabbed to place second at the 2003 Patriot League Championship, which begins a week from yesterday here. The Bison tallied 87 points, and six first-place nods, among the league's head coaches and sports information directors.

The Bison started the season with a 185-102 victory on the road at Drexel on Nov. 2. Bucknell then hosted its first double-dual meet in the new Kinney Natatorium against American and Navy Nov. 16. The women were victorious over both the Eagles (176-124) and the Midshipmen (163-137). Completing the month of November, the Bison marked their fourth win of the season over Army, 141-100.

After taking a month off from dual meets, the Orange and Blue returned to Kinney Natatorium and defeated Lafayette, 188-107, Jan. 11. A week later, the Bison women took their final road trip of the season and captured a 190-110 win over Colgate. Bucknell won its last regular season meet Feb.1, with a 215-85 win over the Mountain Hawks of Lehigh.

The Orange and Blue have been led by senior co-captains Darby Golino and Becky Dolan. Meghan Freese leads the team in dual-meet scoring with 146.25 points, while Golino (144.50), Jamie Flick (143), Lectie Altman (114) and Daniela Faas (105) have accomplished over 100 points each.

In the recent win over Lehigh, the 200 medley relay team broke the school record with its 1:47.28. The team consisted of Golino, Flick, Freese and Mary Krakowski.

"This season has been a great accomplishment," said Foley. "Now we will focus on the goal of winning the Patriot League Championships. This undefeated season has given the team a vast amount of confidence heading into the league meet and has shown other PL schools that Bucknell is a good team."
