Hope Men and Women Squeak by Valparaiso

VALPARAISO, Ind., Jan. 10. BOTH Hope College swimming teams posted a non-league victory over Division I Valparaiso, Ind. on Thursday. In the women's meet the Flying Dutch prevailed 134-126 while in the men's meet Hope won by a 144-105 margin.

Women's Meet
One-two finishes in the 1,650 freestyle and 200 backstroke gave the Flying Dutch their margin of victory. Coach John Patnott's Dutch stand 5-2 in
dual meets this season.

Junior Michelle Smith and senior Erin Vandenberg finished one-two in the 1650 freestyle in 17:44.77 and 18:12.81. Leading the Dutch in the 200 backstroke were junior Audrey Arnold and freshman Meagan O'Neil in 2:11.53 and 2:15.59.

Double winners for the Dutch were Audrey Arnold in the 100 backstroke (1:01.77) and 200 backstroke (2:11.53), senior Kelly Parker in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.06) and 200 breaststroke (2:32.74) and Meagan O'Neil in the 200 butterfly (2:12.92) and 400 individual medley (4:46.03). Also winning was sophomore Sarah Smith in the 100 freestyle (:55.67).

Men's Meet
The Flying Dutchmen improved to 3-3 in duals by capturing first place in 10 of 16 events.

The Dutchmen had one-two finishes in two events. Senior Brian Slagh and freshman David Ornee led the way in the 200 freestyle in 1:44.56 and 1:47.79 while sophomore Jeff Heydlauff and freshman Travis Barkel were one-two in the 50 freestyle in :22.31 and :22.78.

Slagh also won the 100 freestyle (48.13). Senior Dan Bouwens was also a double winner capturing both butterfly events, 200 (2:05.51) and 100 (54.31).

Other Hope winners were sophomore Matt Cook, 1650 freestyle (17:30.20), senior Chris Roecker, 100 backstroke (56.25), and junior Ian Kobes, 200 backstroke (1:58.65), and David Ornee, 500 freestyle (5:01.71).
