NCAA Div. I Women: Virginia Tech Beats Richmond 160-140 -- October 30, 2002

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va., Oct. 30. THE University of Richmond women's swimming team fell to the Virginia Tech Hokies this afternoon, 160-140. Richmond netted nine first place finishes to the Hokies seven.

Richmond record-holder sophomore Mary Adams (Williamsburg, Va.) grabbed two first place finishes in the 200 butterfly (2:06.63) and 500-yard freestyle
(5:04.92).

Senior teammate Elizabeth Cook (Rockville, Va.) swam a 4:31.37 400-yard individual medley to place first. Cook also grabbed first in the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 2:06.10.

Freshman Brooke Boncher (West Newbury, Mass.) exploded to win the 100-yard butterfly in 58.69. In the 100-yard freestyle, Boncher swam to second place in 53.00.

Senior diver Katie Shipe (Mendon, N.Y.) took top honors in 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. Shipe scored 212.85 for the 1-meter and 237.90 in the 3-meter.

The Spiders dual meet record falls to 2-2, while Virginia Tech improves to a 1-2 dual meet record.

Spider swimming returns to the pool Saturday, November 2 for a tri-meet at Maryland with Wingate.
