Nebraska Women Open Season with Intrasquad Meet -- October 5, 2002
LINCOLN, Neb., Oct. 4. NINE different Lady Huskers each won an event as the Red squad out distanced the White team, 140-139 at the 2002 Red vs. White Intrasquad Meet Friday night at the Bob Devaney Sports Center Pool.
Nebraska is rebuilding its women's team under coach Pablo Morales. Two seasons ago, almost the entire women's team quit in sympathy with the men's team, wwhich was eliminated by A.D. Bill Byrne, ostensibly for Title IX and budgetary reasons.
Freshman Alex King was the only Husker to win two events as she claimed both the 100- (55.76) and 200-yard (1:58.22) freestyle events for the White team.
Three others won individual events for the White Team. Sophomore Diana Torres claimed first in the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.68) and freshmen Danielle Erickson (100-yard back, 1:01.72) and Amie Buoy (3-meter dive, 258.60) also took home first place. The White team touched the wall in 1:52.52, just ahead of the Red team (1:52.81) to win the 200-yard medley relay.
Individual event winners for the Red team included: junior Angie Matheu (50-yard free, 25.35), freshman Esmie Holderman (500-yard free, 5:12.14), freshman Lana Baker (100-yard breast 1:08.77), freshman Courtney Petersen (200-yard individual medley, 2:14.07) and redshirt freshman Laura Lunn (1-meter dive, 250.70). The Red team also won the 600-yard free relay.
The Huskers will open the regular season on Thursday, Oct. 10 at 6 p.m. when they host defending Big 12 champion Texas. The dual will mark the first time in school history that the two teams will meet in dual action. NU will also host the Big 12 Relays on Friday, Oct. 11 starting at 9 a.m.
