"The Man With The Golden Shoes" Doubles Up On Award -- January 18, 1997

Michael Johnson, the first man to sweep the Olympic 200m and 400m in Track and Field, has accomplished another first, by winning the Jesse Owens International Award again. In winning the award for the second consecutive year, Johnson beat swimmer Michelle Smith of Ireland, the runner-up, and weightlifter Naim Suleymanoglu of Turkey, who was third in balloting by a worldwide panel of electors.
