By Duncan Scott
PHOENIX, July 26. ONCE again, the highlight of today's session at the Four Corners Sectional Championships featured Dana Kirk.
The reigning Summer USA Swimming National Champion in the 100 meter butterfly, Tacoma Swim Club's Kirk showed her heels to the field with a fine meet record swim of 1:00.69. She won her national title last summer in 1:00.04, after having won the Northwest Section meet at 1:01.65. A sub-minute swim appears to be on the way soon.
Jana Krohn of AFOX was second at 1:02.09, heading a group of five other athletes (two from the consolation final) who were under the 1:03.09 national standard, easily the deepest event of the meet. 200 meter national champion Emily Mason, AFOX, who was fourth in the event at the 2001 Summer Nationals, finished sixth tonight, with the eighth fastest time of the night, but was only .60 seconds behind her unrested best. The depth was truly remarkable.
The closest men's event in terms of depth was the 400 meter freestyle, won by Tyler DeBerry, Tucson Ford Dealers Aquatics, at 4:00.05. Double winner (800 free, 400 individual medley) Brian Davis, Issaquah, touched at 4:00.17 to lead another four swimmers under the 4:02.19 national standard.
Also outstanding was Birte Steven, Corvallis Swim Team, who added the 100 breaststroke to her 200 title by touching at 1:10.31 (meet record 1:10.22 in prelims). Her margin of victory was over two seconds.
And finally, Jamie Tannhauser, Salmon Bay, won back some family bragging rights with a 4:17.93 wire-to- wire victory in the women's 400 free, after big brother Brett had won the men's 200 free last night.
Saturday is the final day of the meet with the 200 individual medley, 50 freestyle, 1500 freestyle and the 4 x 100 medley relay. Great swimming will undoubtedly continue. A special treat may be available in the relay. Misty Hyman, who is not competing in the individual events this week, might be continuing the initial phase of her comeback effort by contributing a relay leg to the AFOX team.
