Dynamo Wins Georgia State Champs: SwimAtlanta's Amanda Weir Blazes 55.87 in the 100m Free -- July 15, 2002
ATLANTA, July 14. DYNAMO Swim Club won the 2002 Long Course Senior State Championships that concluded at Dynamo's Swim Center tonight.
Dynamo's Elizabeth Hill and Aiken-Augusta's Christian kata won the "Outstanding Swimmer" awards for women and men, respectively.
Sixteen year-old Amanda Weir of SwimAtlanta had the meet's outstanding performance -- a state record 55.87 in the 100m freestyle.
Dynamo won the combined team title 4,393- 3,870 over SwimAtlanta, which continually threatened to take the lead throughout the four day meet. The Stingrays were third and Kennesaw fourth, also in a tight race. Dynamo won the men's and women's titles as well.
State records were broken by Hill in the 15-16 200 free, Savannah's Judson Cuttino in the 15-16 800 and SwimAtlanta's Amanda Weir in the 15-16 100 free.
The versatile Hill won eight of nine events over the four-day meet losing only once, to Weir, in the 100 free.
Hill went wire to wire with Weir in the 200 free with Hill going 2:02.47 to Weir's 2:03:36. Hill broke her own state record of 2:02.55, set while placing third at the 2002 Spring Nationals.
Weir'S 55.87 in the 100 sliced almost a second off the previous state record, set by Ashley Chandler in 1995. Weir also won the 50 free in a PR 25.97.
