National Marks Continue to Tumble at Japanese Nationals -- April 3, 2002

TOKYO, April 2. A world record and four additional Japanese national records highlighted the second day of competition of the Japanese National Short Course Championships in Tokyo. This meet overlaps with the World Short Course Championships being held in Moscow beginning Wednesday, April 3.

Sachiko Yamada blasted the four month-old WR for 800 meters freestyle held by China's Chen Hua, when she clocked 8:14.35. Chen's record, set last December, was 5:15.15. See yesterday's story for details.

Tomoko Hagiwara set her second national mark in two days, streaking to a 1:56.58 performance in the 200m freestyle. Yesterday, she set a NR in the 200m backstroke at 2:05.10.

Three men's marks were set today. Tomomi Morita went 24.35 for the 50m backstroke, Daisuke Hosokawa hit the pads in 1:46.09 to take the 200m freestyle, and Shinya Taniguchi swam 4;10.00 for the 400m IM.

There were other outstanding performances as well. Yota Arase dipped under 15 minutes to win the men's 1500 meters in 14:58.13, while Ryo Takayasu took the 100m fly in 52.11.

For the women, Junko Isoda took the 100m breast in 1:07.17, while Sawami Fujita went 4.39.34 to win the 400 IM.
