Fischer Sets South American Record at Continental Championships

BELEM DO PARA, Brazil, March 14. EDUARDO Aquiles Fischer (BRA) broke the South American record in the 100 meter breaststroke on the first day of competition at the South American Long Course Championships. The meet continues through March 17.

Fischer, of Joinville (Estado de Santa Catarina) clocked 1:02.43, slicing 1/100th of a second from his old mark. Fischer celebrates his 22nd birthday next week.

Finals are being held in the morning at this championship meet, as the meet is being broadcast live, nationwide.

In addition to Fischer's continental record, five
championship records were bettered:

Valeria Silva, Peru, Women's 50m breast – 33.19
Monique Ferreira, Brazil, Women's 400m free – 4.17.43
Ivi Monteiro, Brazil, Women's 100m butterfly – 1.03.04
Georgina Bardach, Argentina, Women's 200m IM – 2.18.92
Gustavo Borges, Brazil, Men's 200m free – 1.51.14
