Cumberland College Dismisses Asbury

WILLIAMSBURG, KY., Oct. 24. THE Cumberland College Patriots won their second meet of the year yesterday, as the men's and women's teams swept Asbury College.

The men’s team won 116-45, with the women winning
120-62. Head coach, Garry Nelson, commented: "We are very pleased with how both teams performed. We did much better today than in our opening meet. The team swam better especially in the relays."

On October 12, Cumberland swept the University of Charleston in a home meet.

The men’s team was led by three swimmeres who won two individual events each:

Poorman took first place in the 1000 (11:07.00) and the 500 free (5:06.02). Duncan Mackie won both the 200 IM (2:16.35) and the 100 breast (1:07.94); while
Dennis Holland took the 200 free (1:58.54)and 100 fly (56.75)

The women’s team were also sparked by three double winners:

Rebecca Shanks won the 200 free (2:06.55) and 100 fly (1:04.52). Melinda Clyde recorded wins in the 50 free (26.44) and 100 back (1:0.57). Whitney Qualls took the 200 IM (2:23.34) and 500 (5:33.93).

The Patriots will be in action again on November 9-10, 2001 as they compete in the University of the South Invitational in Sewanee, Tennessee.
