FINA World Championships, Water Polo: Quarterfinals Begin; U.S. Rolls Canada

SHANGHAI, China, July 24. THE quarterfinal matches began in the men's water polo tournament at the FINA World Championships held in Shanghai.

Montenegro doubled up Romania, 8-4, in the first quarterfinal match. Darko Brguljan and Predrag Jokic each connected twice for Montenegro. Cosmin Alexandru Radu wound up only scoring twice for Romania after some monster matches earlier in the week.

Spain followed with a 9-8 victory over Australia. Felipe Perrone Rocha and Javier Garcia Gadea had a hat trick each to lead Spain, while Aidan Joseph Roach and Aaron Younger each tallied two goals for Australia.

The United States looked strong in its match with a 17-4 drubbing of Canada. Jeffery Powers, Ryan Bailey, Tim Hutten and Jesse Smith all converted hat tricks for the Stars and Stripes. Meanwhile, Devon Diggle paced Canada with two goals.

Germany finished the day with an 8-6 triumph over Japan. Marko Yannik Stamm turned in a hat trick for Germany in the win, while Yusuke Shimizu tallied three goals to lead Japan in the loss.

In the semifinals of the 13-16th place classification bracket, Kazakhstan began the day with an 8-7 victory over China. Roman Pilipenko and Alexey Panfili both scored twice for Kazakhstan, while Liang Zhongxing and Xie Junmin tallied two goals each for China as well.

In the other 13-16 semifinal, Brazil downed South Africa, 7-4. Marcelo Franco led a balanced attack by Brazil with two goals, while Bevan Manson scored half of South Africa's goals with two.
